Rick Warren’s Invocation

I though Rick Warren’s invocation was very good. It was God centered and Christ centered. Read it here.

Palm Pre

Posted in gadgets on January 10, 2009 by bdaniel5

Palm prePalm has announced their new product, the Palm Pre. I watched the press release and I must say it is very cool. It is the first smart phone I’ve seen since the iPhone that I feel has a good chance of being an iPhone killer. I’ve talked about the shortcomings of the iPhone myself. Some of them were solved when the iPhone 3G was released. The Pre has stereo bluetooth audio, something I’ve been wanting. It also has sync capabilities with the Google Calendar and Gmail Contacts. Right now I use a combination of Mobile Me and Spanning Sync to achieve this. It has a slide out physical qwerty keyboard. I’ve loved the virtual keyboard on the iPhone since it came out. In fact I’m willing to wager that I can type just as fast on it as a power user can on their physical keyboard.

The Pre has a removable battery. It has a 3MP digital camera with a flash. It’s also got GPS, WiFi, and 3G. One thing they have done right with the Pre is making it possible to do multiple tasks at once. I can start writing an email message and if I think I need to go back and read another, then I can switch to the mailbox easily and get what I need, then switch back to the email I was writing without losing any info. It’s all very intuitive.

I think that this phone will be the first real threat to the iPhone. It has everything the iPhone has and then some. I’d like to see how it manages your music library. I’m pretty happy with iTunes and it will need some way that can easily copy those songs in iTunes to the Pre.

One thing that really interests me is their partners. If you watch the Palm press release, you’ll see the list of partners they’ve been working with. Sprint is the exclusive carrier, which is fine. Their 3G network is really good. It was seeing Telenav as a partner that really interested me. One thing I’d love on my iPhone is turn-by-turn navigation. Unfortunately, the iPhone SDK prohibits such a feature. I’m guessing apple doesn’t want to get sued when someone follows the directions and turns onto a train track and gets killed. But it looks like the Pre will have turn-by-turn navigation powered by Telenav. I just hope it doesn’t cost extra.

Also, all their applications are developed using HTML, CSS, or Java. So there will be thousands of developers out there who can write software for the Pre.

All in all, the Pre looks very nice and very well done. It may be the new life that both Sprint and Palm have needed for a long time. It will be interesting to see it when it comes out and how it stacks up in everyday use with the iPhone, Blackberry, et al.

iWork ‘09

Posted in resolution on January 10, 2009 by bdaniel5

So Apple has released iWork ‘09. It’s $79 and I’m not going to buy it in keeping with my resolution. I was checking it out thinking, this is neat. Then I started thinking that I really don’t use these products enough to buy the latest version and the iWork ‘10 version will probably be even better. Not to mention that I also have Office 2008 plus iWork ‘08, all my office sweet needs have been fully satisfied.

So that’s another $79 I saved and will not spend.

Who Would Jesus Smackdown?

The New York Times has a good article profiling Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. I do like how his preaching offers no compromise and shows the whole picture of God and not just the “nice” side of God. I have to ask myself though, how many people leave his church and think “what a great sermon” or “what great music today” instead of “what a great God”?

Bush leaves legacy of ‘Bushisms’

Posted in Politics on January 7, 2009 by bdaniel5

From the Associate Press

President George W. Bush will leave behind a legacy of Bushisms, the label stamped on the commander in chief’s original speaking style. Some of the president’s more notable malaprops and mangled statements:

– “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” — September 2000, explaining his energy policies at an event in Michigan.

– “Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?” — January 2000, during a campaign event in South Carolina.

– “They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the commander in chief, too.” — Sept. 26, 2001, in Langley, Va. Bush was referring to the terrorists who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks.

– “There’s no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail.” — Oct. 4, 2001, in Washington. Bush was remarking on a back-to-work plan after the terrorist attacks.

– “It would be a mistake for the United States Senate to allow any kind of human cloning to come out of that chamber.” — April 10, 2002, at the White House, as Bush urged Senate passage of a broad ban on cloning.

– “I want to thank the dozens of welfare-to-work stories, the actual examples of people who made the firm and solemn commitment to work hard to embetter themselves.” — April 18, 2002, at the White House.

– “There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.” — Sept. 17, 2002, in Nashville, Tenn.

– “Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.” — Aug. 5, 2004, at the signing ceremony for a defense spending bill.

– “Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren’t able to practice their love with women all across this country.” — Sept. 6, 2004, at a rally in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

– “Our most abundant energy source is coal. We have enough coal to last for 250 years, yet coal also prevents an environmental challenge.” — April 20, 2005, in Washington.

– “We look forward to hearing your vision, so we can more better do our job.” — Sept. 20, 2005, in Gulfport, Miss.

– “I can’t wait to join you in the joy of welcoming neighbors back into neighborhoods, and small businesses up and running, and cutting those ribbons that somebody is creating new jobs.” — Sept. 5, 2005, when Bush met with residents of Poplarville, Miss., in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

– “It was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship. After all, 60 years we were at war 60 years ago we were at war.” — June 29, 2006, at the White House, where Bush met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

– “Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, sir. I talk to families who die.” — Dec. 7, 2006, in a joint appearance with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

– “These are big achievements for this country, and the people of Bulgaria ought to be proud of the achievements that they have achieved.” — June 11, 2007, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

– “Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction. Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit.” — September 2007, in Sydney, Australia, where Bush was attending an APEC summit.

– “Thank you, Your Holiness. Awesome speech.” April 16, 2008, at a ceremony welcoming Pope Benedict XVI to the White House.

– “The fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there’s jobs at the machine-making place.” — May 27, 2008, in Mesa, Ariz.

– “And they have no disregard for human life.” — July 15, 2008, at the White House. Bush was referring to enemy fighters in Afghanistan.

– “I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office.” — June 26, 2008, during a Rose Garden news briefing.

– “Throughout our history, the words of the Declaration have inspired immigrants from around the world to set sail to our shores. These immigrants have helped transform 13 small colonies into a great and growing nation of more than 300 people.” — July 4, 2008 in Virginia.

– “The people in Louisiana must know that all across our country there’s a lot of prayer — prayer for those whose lives have been turned upside down. And I’m one of them. It’s good to come down here.” — Sept. 3, 2008, at an emergency operations center in Baton Rouge, La., after Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast.

– “This thaw — took a while to thaw, it’s going to take a while to unthaw.” Oct. 20, 2008, in Alexandria, La., as he discussed the economy and frozen credit markets.

I got a raise

Posted in life on January 6, 2009 by bdaniel5

So I found out today that I did indeed get a merit raise this year. I’m thankful, that in the current environment of layoffs and cutbacks in much of the corporate world, that I work for an employer who is still giving raises to its employees.

Resolution So far…

Posted in resolution with tags , , on January 6, 2009 by bdaniel5

Well it’s only been five full days since the New Year, but I thought I’d let everybody know that I have NOT broken my resolution. I found out about a new TV show called Legend of the Seeker based on the Terry Goodkind book series The Sword of Truth and I was very tempted to download the shows from iTunes at $2.99 + tax a pop. But I didn’t and just watched the shows on Hulu. Not the ideal situation, but it has saved me $21 so far. I think it might be a good idea to keep a running total of all the stuff I would normally buy without hesitation and don’t and the stuff that I’d probably buy after thinking about it a bit and see how much money I don’t waste this year.

Sickest I’ve Ever Been

Posted in life on January 5, 2009 by bdaniel5

So last Sunday night I started to get a soar throat. Throughout last week my throat was soar and scratchy. I first noticed it playing the drums on Guitar Hero: World Tour and it seemed to get worse as I didn’t talk or swallow or drink. On Wednesday I got some Halls while I was at the store. Wednesday night (New Year’s Eve) we went to Edo Hana Hibachi Grill for dinner. After we got seated my ear started to clog up. It continued to get worse during dinner. When we left the restaurant it was hurting even more. When we arrived at the Brummett’s house it was very painful. After being there for about half an hour or so it continued to worsen. It got so bad that I went home and crawled into bed after taking a hot shower. I’ve never felt so much pain in my life. I lied in bed for several hours writhing in pain. Sometime after midnight my ear started to relieve some pressure and the pain subsided. I was able to sleep.

New Year’s day was fun, I had some friends over to watch the Nebraska game and hang out. I smoked brisket and beer can chicken. They were both quite good. My ear was still stopped up but it wasn’t painful.

I woke up Friday morning pretty much the same, but when I was taking my shower I noticed that I had blood coming out of my ear. This caused quite a scare! I was also hacking up green mucus and went to the CareNow. There was an hour and a half wait and they got my number to call me when they were ready. I went back later and the doctor confirmed that I had an ear infection. He also told me that I had bronchitis and tonsillitis and I might even have strep throat. So he gave me prescriptions and sent me on my way. Now my sore throat is gone and I’m pretty much done hacking up green mucus. My ear is still clogged though. This is quite annoying, everything sounds like I am underwater. Fortunately, only one ear is infected.

My New Year’s Resolution

Posted in Uncategorized on December 22, 2008 by bdaniel5

So I don’t remember the last time I made any New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t think I’ve ever done it in my adult life. I never wanted to make a list of things I’m say I going to do and not do them. This year, however, is different. I only have one resolution for this year. In the way of Jonathan Edwards:

Resolved to not buy anything new during 2009.

So there you have it. Me, the master of spending money, is resolved not to spend any money on new things during 2009. No buying gadgets or games. I’m not buying movies and I’m not buying music. I’m going cold turkey, baby. I’ll still buy food and household items (soap, deoderant, light bulbs, maintenance items). If I happen to start losing weight and need smaller clothes, I’ll buy those (my only exception). I’ll still buy the gifts I’d normally buy for birthdays & Christmas.

p.s. There are 365 days in the year. If you’d like to enter a pool to pick the day I’ll break my resolution, they’re $2 each. Winner takes all, less my 10% cut.
:)
