Partisanship in Washington
I will admit that I was happy the bailout bill failed in the House. I hope the one the Senate approved lastnight fails in Congress as well. Especially since tax cuts have been added to the bill. It is irresponsible to increase spending and at the same time cut taxes.
But that’s not what I’m writing about today. What really frustrates me is the partisanship that was shown last week when the House voted on the first bailout bill. First, we’ll start with Pelosi’s speech that railed against the current administration and Republicans; it was extremely partisan in nature. While I am not a fan of the current administration, a speech like hers before such an important vote was extremely irresponsible.
Even worse were the Republicans who switched there vote at the last minute because of her speech. There they sat right as they were about to cast their ballots and they let their decision be influenced by partisan politics. They should be voting on the merits of their bill. Is the bill good for their consituents? Will it benefit his voters? Will it benefit the whole country? What are the long term effects of the bill? Those are the questions that should determine his vote. BUT NO! They voted on a speech. They changed their vote because Nancy Pelosi went on a tirade against the current administration and Republicans. The Wall Street Journal wrote:
Her highly partisan speech on the floor — blaming “right-wing ideology of anything goes, no supervision, no discipline, no regulation” for the financial distress — is no excuse for Republicans to vote no.
So that is my rant today. I’m not happy with the bailout plan. I am also unhappy with the recent partisanship shown in Washington.
